Bicycling – My Passion

Every day of our life, each of us relies on something or someone to communicate our innermost thoughts and share experiences and feelings. Riding my bicycle has always been such a gateway to reinvent and rejuvenate myself amidst the beauty of nature.
I must confess today that bicycling is my passion. In 2016, I experimented with many sports and activities to realize that riding my bike – brings innermost joy. It was on the lush green paths of Nashik countryside that I fully awakened to my ultimate passion. When I rode my bike, it would give me immense pleasure and bring back thousands of memories from my childhood. I would ride alone for miles. It was as if I was on a solo journey of self-discovery. Riding on the rugged mountains, enjoying the cascading water coming down on the foothills, taking the least traveled routes, and finding unknown trails brought so much joy that I cannot think of giving up cycling anytime. So much so that I follow my passion even when I am in the city.
Although cities have limitations- in terms of roads, they also reveal deep secrets when you bicycle along old streets when the noisy traffic goes silent. I discovered that big cities in India also have massive potential for cycling adventures. Bicycling in European countries is blooming as a mode of transport and also a luxury experience. Citizens prefer riding on their bikes and reaching their office rather than getting stuck in traffic. Many ancient and new cities encourage cycling expeditions to discover their older parts and modern marvels of architecture on a bicycle.

This love affair with bicycles comes with pleasant side effects. It is one of the healthiest and the most environmentally friendly forms of exercise. Bicycling feeds the need of exercising for the body, and being with nature feeds the mind and soul. Today as we celebrate World Bicycle Day, we must recommit ourselves to the sacred obligation of maintaining good health and making an eco-friendly planet.
Finally, I agree with HG Wells’s lines – He says, “Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race.” I feel what he means –there is a child in every grown-up person, let the child in you be freed. Let the child in all of us balance two wheels of life – health and an eco-friendly planet in great harmony.
