Noise Pollution A Collective Crime We Can Stop - Dr. Ravinder Singal

Noise pollution:

Noise pollution is not just an individual act  it is a collective crime against society. Whether it is unnecessary honking, bursting crackers, playing DJs at deafening volumes, or simply talking too loudly in public spaces, the impact of noise is far-reaching.

The Supreme Court of India has clearly set the limits: in residential areas, noise should not exceed 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night. Yet, how often do we see these limits being violated?

We frequently witness people losing control during festivals, weddings, or political gatherings, with DJ systems blaring far beyond permissible levels and disturbing entire neighborhoods. Many do not pause to think about the schools where children are trying to study, the hospitals where patients need rest, or the courts where justice is being delivered. Noise does not discriminate it affects senior citizens, children, students, birds, and even animals.

The police are expected to enforce the law, but is enforcement alone enough? Real change must begin with self-discipline and respect for others. Each of us has the power to reduce noise pollution by making small choices by refusing to honk unnecessarily, lowering the volume, and being mindful of the environment we share.

Personally, I have not used the horn for many years while driving or riding, and the experience has been liberating. The joy of calmness on the road is unmatched. Imagine if all of us took the same step.

The best gift we can give to others is peace. Let us respect silence. Let us start today.
